Custom implants may be coming

Custom-made implants are among the new orthopedics products expected in the coming years. Computer analysis and imaging may contribute to patients receiving a hip, knee or other implant on demand, said Ehab Esmail, director, regulatory affairs at Wright Medical Technology Inc.

The comments were made during a panel discussion on the future of the orthopedics industry during the ODT Conference and Expo at the Grand Wayne Center.

The tissue regeneration sector also “may be an interesting market” in about five to 10 years, said Martin Gold, principal and founder of Technology Access Partners. Panelists also said combination implants with metal or plastic and tissue also are being researched.
